Wellness care starts before you are sick or after you have regained your health. After your initial phase of care, your doctor will discuss the importance of maintaining your results, and the best strategies to do so. Wellness chiropractic care can be proactionary to avoid future health problems. Or Wellness chiropractic care can follow a plan of action to maintain the spinal progress that you achieved through corrective chiropractic care. This helps you avoid falling back to where you began and to avoid further spinal/nervous system problems in the future.
Regardless of which plan you follow, the best time to check for vertebral subluxations is before the lack of nerve supply causes a breakdown of cells, tissues, and organs. The World Health Organization reminds us that disease takes time to develop. Chiropractors look at subluxation and your health like this: Lack of vital nerve energy starves tissue, causing cells to die. This can lead to organ malfunction, which starts a cycle of symptoms or pain. The biggest mistake that we see is people wait until they have symptoms that interfere with their way of life before they do anything about their health. Although this is common, it is not the safe way to go about it. Studies show that you have lost up to 40% of your health before you feel your first sign or symptom. In other words, by the time you have experienced your first sign or symptom, you have had disease manifesting in your body for years, or in some cases decades before you were made aware of it by the symptoms you develop. The wellness approach of frequent chiropractic checkups, to locate and correct vertebral subluxations, helps to prevent the onset of sickness, pain, and disease.
Prevention is acting before something breaks down, to avoid future problems. One of the most important things you will ever do for your health is chiropractic care. Protected inside your skull and vertebrae are your brain and nervous system, which is the information center of your entire body. This lifeline is responsible for every function in your body. When you participate in wellness chiropractic care, you are investing in your future by optimizing your health and overall wellness. This is done by analyzing the spine for misaligned vertebrae, called subluxations. These subluxations apply pressure to the nervous system, mostly the spinal cord and nerve roots in this particular example. Subluxations can be asymptomatic, hiding for years in the body, all the while decreasing the body’s ability to function optimally, and robbing it of its ability to heal efficiently. This pressure, in some cases can be less than the weight of a dime on the nervous system. There was a study done in the 1990’s at the University of Colorado that stated the weight of a dime, or 10mm of mercury on a blood pressure cuff, on a nerve root, shut down that nerve up to 40 to 60 percent. Now imagine! If I put a dime on your shoulder and proceeded to talk to you for a few minutes, what is the likelihood you would be aware that that dime was still there? Would it cause pain? Would it cause symptoms? No of course not! So why would it be any different for that nerve? Nerve pressure does not necessarily cause pain. What it does do is steal the body’s ability to receive proper nerve transmission, in turn manifesting in a decrease of the body's ability to function optimally, eventually leading to symptoms.
The World Health Organization defines health as this “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” In other words, we cannot wait to get sick, because many times it will already be too late.
Here is an example of what this might look like: the nerves that come out of the spine at the level of T4 travels to your thyroid. This is how the brain communicates to your thyroid tissue so it knows how to produce the proper amount of hormone. What would happen if the nerve could not do that efficiently? Would the thyroid work at 100%? If you left that pressure on that nerve for 5 years, 10 years, 15 years, what would eventually happen to that thyroid? I think we can all agree it would not be good! Your thyroid controls two things. Energy hormones and weight loss hormones. If you have pressure on the nerve that goes to your thyroid, your energy goes down and weight goes up. And it's hard to lose the weight gained. The new year comes along and you think, this is my year, I am going to be strict with my diet plan, I am going to exercise and I am going to try to lose weight. And you lose 5, 10, 15 pounds and you plateau. You can eat all the right foods and do all the right exercise, but if you have pressure on the nerve that goes to your thyroid, It won't release a weight loss hormone, and if it gets worse then you are diagnosed with what is called hypothyroidism, you are put on Synthroid, and you will be told to stay on it for the rest of your life. They’ll say it is incurable. NOT TRUE! We see people all the time in our office get off Synthroid and levo, but you have to fix the cause by removing the interference (subluxation).
The key to avoiding all of this and many other health issues is being proac tive and not allowing it to get to this point. A wellness plan is designed to do just that. Analyze the spine to catch problems before they manifest into symptoms, all in the hopes to avoid symptoms, medications, and disease in the future.
